Salsa in Puerto Rico

Although you’ll hear salsa music everywhere in Puerto Rico it may be more difficult to find someplace to learn salsa dancing.

Here are a few suggestions to help you find Puerto Rico’s favorite music and join in the fun!

If you’re lucky enough to be in San Juan during July 16-30, 2011, make sure to head over to the Convention Center for the annual Puerto Rico Salsa Congress with the best salsa dancers in the world! There will also be salsa workshops, demonstrations and concerts throughout San Juan – so come to Puerto Rico and dance, dance, dance!

Santurce – Plaza del Mercado – “La Placita’

Every Thursday and Friday night, the historic public market (1910) in Santurce hosts the most popular street party in San Juan.  While the bars, clubs and restaurants that surround the market are open every night – on Thursday and Friday night, the streets are closed to traffic and the party takes over.

There is no set schedule, but you’ll usually find great Salsa here in the bars and on the streets.  The party starts about 7pm and continues past midnight.

Plaza del Mercado is easy to reach from Condado via Calle Washington and then Calle Canals (other side of the highway) or by taxi. Ask your hotel for the best way.    Click here for hotels in San Juan’s Condado neighborhood.

From Miramar just take the M3 or T5 bus and get off by the big blue church just past the Metro Theater (the Plaza is one long block on any of the streets across from the church).  Click here for small hotels in San Juan’s Miramar neighborhood.

If you’re staying in Ocean Park or Isla Verde – check with your hotel for the best way to reach ‘La Placita’.
