Noche de San Juan – Midnight Celebration
 Every year at the stroke of midnight on June 23rd, the beaches of San Juan come alive as Puerto Rico’s capital city celebrates their patron saint – San Juan Bautista.
The local tradition is to go to the beach after 11pm and as midnight approaches, thousands of people wade into the water waiting for the exact moment to fall backwards into the water. Its a matter of debate exactly how many times you should repeat the process. The minimum is to enter the water three times to cleanse any bad luck from the preceding year and ensure a good start to the year ahead. Some people seem to think more repetitions will be more effective.
The official part sponsored by the city of San Juan takes place at the ‘Ultimate Trolley’ beach – located between Ocean Park and Punta las Marias neighborhoods (halfway between Condado and Isla Verde). Thursday evening will feature lots of music with the groups “Mayombe”, Melina León, Grupo Zakandela, Plena Dulzura and NG2.
Activities in ‘Ultimo Trolley Park’ continue through the weekend culminating with a 10K race on Sunday.
However, people crowd the beaches all along the major tourist areas of San Juan and Isla Verde with informal activities as people head to the beach just before midnight and stay to party into the night.
