The Ironman 70.3 events combine swimming, bicycling and running in one of the most intense athletic competitions that test an athlete’s skill, strategy and endurance. The course will start with swimming in the Condado Lagoon, continue with bicycling along the north coast to Dorado, swim in the Condado Lagoon and finish with the foot race through Old San Juan: SWIM - Participants will swim 1.2 miles (1.9 km), which will be held in the protected waters of the Condado Lagoon. Spectators and Athletes will have a great view of the Swim Course from the San Juan Beach, the Dos Hermanos Bridge and the Caribe Hilton’s San Geronimo grounds. Water temperatures are expected to be around 78° Fahrenheit (26° Celsius). The transition between the swim and bike will take place in the Sixto Escobar Stadium, adjacent to the Caribe Hilton (view Ironman 70.3 San Juan 2011, Swim Course - Click Here). BIKE - Athletes will endure a 56-mile (90 km) bike ride. The majority of the bike course will cover the northern part of the island from San Juan heading west towards the municipality of Dorado. RUN - The running course will take athletes on a 13.1 mile (21 km) run through the city of Old San Juan. Runners will make their way through the northern part of the islet with breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean, running past 16th century Spanish architecture on their way to reach the turn around point at the entrance of the famous Fort San Felipe del Morro. This 16th century citadel, constructed to protect the town from attack by sea, is one of the highlights of any tour of the old city, a rocky web of tunnels and barracks, towers and prisons. Probably the most famous monument from Spanish colonial times, the fortress stands out on a rocky islet, forever a reminder of a different age. Calle San Sebastian is the official center of the festival, but activities take place throughout Old San Juan. During the day, street parades feature unique masked characters that resemble walking dolls – plus the typical horned festival masks made of coconut husks common in Loiza or papier maché favored in Poncé. Lots of music, food and fun for everyone. After dark, the party takes over the streets and the street’s famous bars spill out to the packed street. Plan to use public transportation if you don’t actually stay in the Old City. There are special bus schedules to handle the crowds. Noche de San Juan – Midnight Celebration
The local tradition is to go to the beach after 11pm and as midnight approaches, thousands of people wade into the water waiting for the exact moment to fall backwards into the water. Its a matter of debate exactly how many times you should repeat the process. The minimum is to enter the water three times to cleanse any bad luck from the preceding year and ensure a good start to the year ahead. Some people seem to think more repetitions will be more effective. The official part sponsored by the city of San Juan takes place at the ‘Ultimate Trolley’ beach – located between Ocean Park and Punta las Marias neighborhoods (halfway between Condado and Isla Verde). Thursday evening will feature lots of music with the groups “Mayombe”, Melina León, Grupo Zakandela, Plena Dulzura and NG2. Activities in ‘Ultimo Trolley Park’ continue through the weekend culminating with a 10K race on Sunday. However, people crowd the beaches all along the major tourist areas of San Juan and Isla Verde with informal activities as people head to the beach just before midnight and stay to party into the night.
